When it comes to our core, our initial thoughts run to our abdominal muscles. Without hesitation we all think of a sit-up or crunches, but do we know how effective these movements really are?

Our core muscles do more than make us look good on the beach. We need them for our everyday lives for balance, trunk stability, breathing and bowel control. We can strengthen our core muscles and get back into fighting shape with classic core activation movements.

Three classic core movements to help pull your body back into shape:

1. Planking
2. The turtle sit
3. Seated crunches

Try planking for as long as you possibly can. The amount of time you can stay in a planking position with proper form is a great indicator of your core strength.
